All youth from kindergarten to 12th grade looking for a fun summer activity are invited to pitch horseshoes on Tuesday evenings at the Forest Lake VFW.
The Minnesota Gopher State Horseshoe Pitchers Association (MGSHPA) has partnered with Lakes Area Youth Service Bureau (LAYSB) to offer Youth Horseshoes League.
From Tuesday, June 11 until Tuesday, August 13, MGSHPA president Rick Wright will be on hand to supervise on Tuesdays from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the horseshoe pits at VFW Post 4210, 556 SW 12th St.
Wright, who has 25 years experience, said the distance kids throw depends on their age: Juniors (ages 13 to 18) use the regulation 30 feet. Cadets (ages 12 and under) throw from 20 feet, but for the youngest kids, Wright said, the distance can be shortened to just 10 feet.
Each Tuesday evening, students will receive instruction and practice, followed by competitive games based on skill level. The June 11 session will begin with a meeting.
Horseshoes league is free, but students must bring their own horseshoes. Prizes will be awarded.
Pre-registration is required. Download the Youth Horseshoes League sign-up form at www.ysblakesarea.org. For more information, call Andria Flaherty at Lakes Area Youth Service Bureau at 651-464-3685 or Rick Wright at 651-491-2404.
