Motorcyclists to trek state in week-long VFW event
Forest Lake will play a role in a special event that will bring veterans from across the state together and honor their service.
VFW Post 4210, 556 SW 12th St., will serve as a Memorial Day rally point in the “Ride for Healing” put on by the Department of Minnesota Veterans of Foreign Wars.
The event starts at the state Capitol on Memorial Day, May 27, and culminates with a two-day rally in Brainerd ending June 2. Four teams of motorcycle riders will depart from St. Paul and stop for rallies at VFW posts throughout the state before converging in Brainerd May 31. A final, two-day rally there will cap the event.
The public is invited to the rally in Forest Lake, which will take place from 1-2 p.m. on Memorial Day. A state VFW official will deliver a message honoring and thanking Vietnam veterans.
Forest Lake represents the first stopping point for Team Delta, which will ride the northeastern route through Isanti, Duluth, Hibbing, Grand Rapids and Garrison, among other cities.
Funds raised through registration, donations and sponsors will go toward the construction of an education center at the Vietnam Memorial in Washington, D.C. The ride’s cause was selected by VFW State Commander Lee Ulferts of Brooklyn Park.
“As a combat wounded veteran of Vietnam, I see this as a healing process and the welcome home that many Vietnam veterans never received,” Ulferts said. “The Education Center at the National Vietnam Veterans Memorial will house the legacy of the Vietnam veteran and their sacrifices.”
