After serving 17 years on the Scandia Fire Department, Chief Jim Finnegan has submitted his resignation.

To be nearer to their family, the Finnegans have sold their house in Scandia and moved to St. Croix Falls.

At the May 21 council meeting, Mayor Randall Simonson thanked Finnegan for his service, saying “It’s a debt that nobody can pay.”

“It was an honor to do it,” Finnegan replied. “I’m proud to say I was a member of the Scandia Fire Department.”

The city will look internally for a replacement. Résumés from existing fire department members are being accepted and interviews will be conducted the week of June 10.

Finnegan will stay on the job until his successor is appointed. After that, he plans to serve with another fire department. “I’ll keep my credentials up and see what goes from there,” he said.

Finnegan has been the fire chief in Scandia since 2009. When former chief Steve Spence  retired, the fire department voted to recommend Finnegan, who was then assistant fire chief, for the job.

Finnegan expressed gratitude to the men and women who served with him on the fire department, and also to the citizens of Scandia for their commitment and support.
