Lake Fest organizers are hoping the third time will indeed be a charm as the annual celebration kicks off Friday.

Last year’s week of activities grew on the inaugural effort from 2011, and Lake Fest is set to hit new heights again in 2013. New attractions, like a fishing tournament and dueling pianos show, are on deck for this year’s event.

Community effort

Lake Fest once again is a collaborative effort of the city of Forest Lake, Forest Lake Area Schools and the Forest Lake Area Chamber of Commerce. Under those umbrellas, a host of organizations and businesses get involved to create a true community festival.

The Forest Lake Area Historical Society coordinates its unveiling of the year’s museum exhibit with Lake Fest.

The Arts in the Park series, a summer-time staple at Lakeside Memorial Park, makes a two-day debut.

Businesses sponsor activities like a 5K run/walk, a waterski show, concerts and a talent show.

The school district’s Community Education program hosts several events geared toward youth.

School spirit is on display through the Build-a-Boat Challenge, a contest that starred as a new event last year.

The American Legion and VFW posts get involved through the service of the combined Color Guard.

Educational nonprofits support the school district with several events leading up to next Thursday’s graduation ceremony, which caps the week.
