Thursday morning has been kind to Forest Lake on the state tournament front. Angie Ryan’s softball squad defeated Farmington 3-1 in the first round of the eight-team Class AAA bracket in North Mankato, while sophomore tennis standout Toby Boyer prevailed in his first match of the Class AA singles tournament.
The softball team led throughout its matchup with the Section 1 champion Tigers, who came in with a record of 20-5. Michelle LaCasse ended the contest with back-to-back strikeouts, stranding two runners. The Rangers (23-2) will face Elk River (19-3) in this afternoon’s semifinals. The Elks scored twice in the seventh inning to rally past Orono, 2-1, this morning.
Boyer cruised to a 6-1, 6-1 win over Becker junior Jason Dilly. At noon, he faces St. Paul Central ninth-grader Cason Hiers. Boyer is seeded second and is playing in the opposite half of the bracket from top-seeded Maxwell Olson, an Edina junior. Boyer is attempting to win his family’s fifth-straight singles title. His brother, Dusty, won the crown from 2009-2012.
AFTERNOON UPDATE: Boyer won his second-round match, 6-2, 6-3 to advance to the semifinals. He will face third-seeded Jesse Sprinkel, a sophomore from Minneapolis South. The semifinals begin at 8 a.m. tomorrow, June 7 at the University of Minnesota’s Baseline Tennis Center.
