Sophomore Toby Boyer finished as runner-up in singles at the state tennis tournament (Class AA) last Friday at the Baseline Tennis Center in Minneapolis.
Boyer earned his spot in the finals with wins over Jason Dilly of Becker (6-1, 6-1), Cason Hiers of St. Paul Central in the quarterfinals (6-2, 6-3) on Thursday and No. 3 Jesse Sprinkel of Minneapolis South (6-3, 6-1) on Friday morning.
Boyer faced junior Joel Richards of Minnetonka in the title matchup at 11:30 a.m. on Friday.
The nearly two-and-a-half hour battle was a roller coaster of overhead smashes and drop shots by both players. Richards took the first set 7-5, while Boyer came back with a run in the second set to capture it, 6-3. But with a score of 5-5 in the final tiebreaker set, Richards gained enough momentum to win the final two games for the state title.
Boyer closed the 2012-13 season with a record of 26-1.
