Two businesses owned by the Roberts family of Forest Lake have come together to beautify downtown. Forest Lake Floral and Roberts Family Funeral Home teamed up to sponsor this year’s crop of 80 large flower baskets that hang off light poles.

The hanging basket tradition was started in 1997 by Diane Rueb in memory of her late husband, former Forest Lake mayor John Skoglund. The local business community and the city of Forest Lake continued sponsorship annually until the Robertses this year had the idea of supporting the project 100 percent.

“Enhancing our downtown area with flowers is one more way for us to give back to our community along with creating a living memorial for the families we serve each year,” said Kelly Roberts of the funeral home. “Each basket will be displayed in memory of loved ones we serve throughout the year.”

The gesture is appreciated by Kathleen Lynch, whose husband, Tom, a former City Councilman, passed away in May.

“It means alot,” she said. “It was a good thing to do, and adds a nice touch to the city.”

Great job Roberts family. The flowers look great. It’s nice to see local businesses like yours invest back into our community.
