Theater company holds benefit
So when air quality upgrades at the high school meant the auditorium would not be available for a summer Masquers Theatre production of “Annie,” they decided to do something about it.
First, they tried to find a suitable alternate venue. Nothing came up.
Then they toyed with the idea of raising money to build an auditorium.
“We thought, maybe it’s time to look at purchasing our own theater,” said board member Judy Marleau. A benefit performance would raise funds toward that end.
But her husband had another idea. “I think we’d better do something for cancer, to give back to the community,” he said.
After talking with Kathy Bystrom of Fairview Lakes Community Health Outreach, the Masquers board decided to hold a benefit for the Forest Lake Relay for Life, a fundraising event for the American Cancer Society.
On Saturday, July 27, stars of previous shows will gather at Faith Lutheran Church, 886 North Shore Drive in Forest Lake, to recreate magical moments from past productions.
The night begins at 6:30 p.m. with appetizers from Vannelli’s by the Lake. Beverages will be available for purchase.
Then, at 7:30, the music begins.
Lori Jo Scherb will sing “Something Wonderful” from “The King and I.”
From “South Pacific,” Marleau will perform “Bali Hai” and Bill Roman will sing “Some Enchanted Evening.”
Heidi Leeson will recreate her role as Maria, governess to the von Trapp family, when she sings “The Sound of Music.”
There will also be songs from “The Fantastiks,” “Oliver,” “Joseph & the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat,” “Beauty and the Beast,” “The Music Man,” “Don’t Hug Me,” “Little Shop of Horrors,” “Fiddler on the Roof” and “The Wizard of Oz.”
The cast of 21 will be led by master of ceremonies Doniver Ahlm.
Tickets cost $30 and are available by calling 651-464-5823 or visiting www.masquerstheatre.org. Of this amount, $19 is tax-deductible and will go to the Forest Lake Relay for Life.
A free-will offering will be collected to help support Masquers Theatre Company and their commitment to the arts.
