Brent T. Peterson will sign copies of his latest book, a pictorial history of the city of Stillwater,  from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 24.

An online review of the book says it captures some of the best Stillwater photos, including ones never before published.

Settled in 1843, Stillwater was the center of the lumber industry in the upper Midwest for 75 years. During the 1880s and 1890s, more logs passed down the St. Croix River than any other place in the world. The lumber produced in Stillwater was used to build the central part of the United States.

Besides logs, lumber and milling, topics include early Stillwater life, bars, businesses, neighborhoods, churches, schools and government.

Peterson, executive director of the Washington County Historical Society, has written and published five books on Stillwater history. A Stillwater native, he started his career at the St. Croix County Historical Society in Hudson. He also worked for five years at the Minnesota Historical Society before coming to Washington County.

“Stillwater” is available at area bookstores or through Arcadia Publishing, (888)-313-2665 or www.arcadiapublishing.com. The softcover book costs $21 at Arcadia Publishing, with free shipping, or $16.64 at Amazon.com.
