The Forest Lake girls cross country team took first place at the Section 7AA meet in Cloquet this afternoon, securing the squad’s fifth state bid in six years.
Sophomore Emma Benner earned the title of section champion with a personal best time of 14:38 in the 4K race, three seconds ahead of the runner up from North Branch and 15 seconds ahead of the third-place finisher.
Eighth-grader Caroline Schoessow and ninth-grader Allie Bartlett came in at sixth and seventh place, respectively, while ninth-grader Maria Valentin finished in 16th. Ninth-grader Amanda Forliti rounded out the scoring in 20th place.
The Rangers tallied 50 points, well ahead of second-place finisher Elk River (81 points).
The Ranger boys returned a nearly-healthy squad to compete at the section race in Cloquet earlier today, where they earned fourth place of 16 teams.
The host team captured the title, followed by Chisago Lakes and Andover.
Juniors Quinn Duffy and Chris Delgado paved the way for the Rangers. Duffy took 19th in a field of 109 while Delgado followed two places later.
Junior Leo Hipp placed 27th for Forest Lake while sophomore Tommy Babcock earned 40th. Junior Riley Schilling finished in 41st to close the scoring.
