The Forest Lake park system will get a cool upgrade this winter: The Park Board in September approved an agreement with Washington County that will result in Castlewood Golf Course being groomed for nordic skiing.
County crews will groom the looped trail whenever they are in the area to do the same at Big Marine Park Reserve. The new recreation opportunity will cost the city between $2,000 and $3,000, depending on trail and weather conditions. Funds will come out of the general parks budget.
Park Director Renae Reedy said the idea stemmed from interest in community wellness initiatives. She said response to the trail will be monitored in its first year to see whether to make it permanent.
There will be no user fee, but skiers must bring their own equipment. The trail will accommodate skiers of both the skate and classic techniques.
