The Columbus Planning Commission on Dec. 18 voted unanimously to forward items regarding a proposed automobile lot to the City Council for review. A rezoning request, conditional use permit and comprehensive plan amendment will go before the council Wednesday, Jan. 8.

Insurance Auto Auctions Inc. wants to expand its business that is composed about 70 percent of online bidding for damaged vehicles that are ruled as losses by insurance agents, dealerships or rental car companies.

The applicant typically would hold one live auction per week at its lot, proposed to be on 20 acres of commercial land west of Lake Drive and north of Pine Street. The company’s plan also involves a rezoning of 40 agricultural acres further west from the lot on Lake Drive.

If the City Council approves the requests, the company’s business operations would see most of the damaged vehicles hauled from the lot just as they arrived, with no disassembly allowed on the site.
