You can make a difference by mentoring

Andria Flaherty, Lakes Area Youth Service Bureau

January is National Mentoring Month, and the Lakes Area Youth Service Bureau needs you. The Making Connections mentoring program gives youth ages 10 to 17 an opportunity to build a positive and encouraging relationship with a supportive adult in the community.

These are kids who seek additional adult support, improved self esteem, positive reinforcement, someone to look up to, improved academic performance and improved relationships overall.

If you are a positive role model, want to connect with youth in the community, are patient and willing to listen and like to have fun, then you are a good candidate to be a mentor. All mentors receive general volunteer training and a detailed training session on mentoring.

Mentors and mentees meet at least two times a month for a minimum of six months, according to a schedule they determine together.

Adults who want to share their gifts with a local tween or teen, and youth who want to be matched with an adult mentor, should contact the Lakes Area Youth Service Bureau at 651-464-3685 or e-mail [email protected]

Lakes Area Youth Service Bureau is a non-profit organization serving residents of Washington, Chisago and Anoka counties to ensure the success of youth. For more information, visit
