Free preschool available at Head Start

Low-income families can take advantage of a child development program for children at no cost to the family.

Head Start is a federal program of the United States Department of Health and Human Services created to promote school readiness.

A preschool for up to 20 children ages 3 to 5 is offered at the Lakes Head Start Center at Forest Hills United Methodist Church, 1790 SE 11th St. in Forest Lake.

Head Start focuses on physical, intellectual, emotional and social development of children while providing advocacy and assistance to parents.

A family of two earning $15,730 per year, or a family of four earning $23,850, is eligible for the program. Families on County Assistance or Supplemental Social Security can also participate at no cost, even if their annual income exceeds the income guidelines.

Applications are accepted all year. Limited transportation service is available, and special needs are accommodated.
