Four members of Scandia Fire and Rescue participated in the American Lung Association Fight For Air Firefighter Climb in Minneapolis Feb. 22. Wearing full turnout gear wearing more than 40 pounds, the men climbed 31 stories of the U.S. Bank Plaza in under 10 minutes. They raised $1,256 for the American Lung Association of Minnesota.

“This was a timed event, but our goal as a team was to not race but make it from point A to point B,” said fireman Erich Kertzscher, who ran stairs at the Scandia fire station to train for the event.

It was the department’s debut in the annual event. Former Chief Jim Finnegan suggested members participate. Fireman Bill Schwartz volunteered, and Mike Frank, Dave Mead and Kertzscher joined him.
