A St. Paul man’s night had already gone wrong when he found himself in Forest Lake on Friday, March 14. It became much worse by the end.

The 29-year-old had gone to Vadnais Heights to hang out with a female co-worker. Upon meeting he entered her van, only to find the woman’s husband and another man in the back. The St. Paul man was kidnapped and driven to Brooklyn Center where, while parked, he unsuccessfully tried to escape the van through a window.

The woman then drove the group up Interstate 35 to Highway 8, then off the highway to near the intersection of Itasca Avenue and Itasca Court in Forest Lake. The St. Paul man was told to exit the van and walk, and he said he saw the husband grab a knife. A fight ensued between the two, then the husband, wife and the unidentified van occupant fled.

An area resident called police around 10 p.m. Forest Lake police found the victim with a 6 to 7-inch laceration on his face.

Last Wednesday, March 19, Forest Lake police assisted the Brooklyn Center Police Department in bringing the husband into custody at his residence.

Boon Wa Thao, 39, was charged in Washington County district court on Friday with kidnapping and first-degree assault.
