Effective July 1, Forest Lake High School Assistant Principal James Caldwell will officially be the principal at Linwood Elementary.

Since December Caldwell has been serving as interim principal at Linwood, which was without a principal due to Roche Martin’s leave of absence and resignation. Columbus Elementary special education teacher Nancy Rosman filled in for Martin from September to December.

The opening was posted in March, and Caldwell’s transfer was approved by the School Board at the April 10 meeting as part of the consent agenda. The vote was 5-0 with members Julie Corcoran and Dan Keiger absent.

Also at the meeting, the board authorized a request for proposal for a new telephone voice system, data switches and implementation services.

The current phone system, with more than 1,000 handsets and fax machines, is over 15 years old. Business Director Larry Martini said the system has exceeded its expected useful life.

The makers no longer offer system support, so the district must find parts and supplies from recyclers and salvage companies.

“We’re getting parts from eBay,” he said. “It’s time to go back to corporate suppliers.”

The School Board will hear a recommendation at the May 29 meeting, and the system could be in operation by July.

Martini said the system might cost between $500,000 and $750,000 and could be paid for with lease financing over seven years, with annual payments under $100,000.
