Eklund earns Eagle Scout rank

Luke Eklund of Scandia has earned the rank of Eagle Scout, the highest rank awarded by the Boy Scouts of America.

The Eagle Scout Court of Honor will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, May 18 at the Scandia Community Center, 14727 209th Street.

Eklund joined Cub Scout Pack 173 in Scandia as a Tiger in 2004 and Scandia Boy Scout Troop 9173 as a fifth-grader. Both troops are sponsored by Elim Lutheran Church.

As a member of Troop 9173, he completed 28 merit badges and had numerous camping experiences, outings and service projects.

In June 2013 Eklund  completed his Eagle project, restoring the Swedish Monument in Scandia. The project involved pouring concrete pads and installing antique concrete benches, planting shrubs and perennial flowers, restoring an informational sign and adding mulch. The project was funded by the Scandia-Marine Lions Club.

The 17-year-old is a junior at Hill Murray High School in Maplewood, where he is active in robotics and band competitions. After high school he plans to attend college to become an aero-space engineer.

He is the son of Brenda and Wayne Eklund of Scandia and the younger brother of Sam and Bridget.
