Martin Mower is looking for good workers. Mower, owner of the Arcola Lumber Mill and manager of the St. Croix Boom Company, will take applications for employment at 7:30 p.m. on June 7.

Positions are open at the Arcola Mill and Boat Yards and at Martin’s Dry Goods in Arcola. Sales assistants are needed at the Mower Block in Stillwater, construction workers at the territorial prison construction site and river rats at the boom site.

Wages start at $1 per day.

Mr. Mower will explain the operations of his numerous enterprises in the valley. All persons are welcome, any age or gender considered. Apply in person at the William O’Brien State Park visitor center fire-ring.

Grab a bench seat or bring a camp chair or blanket, because Forest Lake storyteller Dwight Wilcox will present a special characterization of Martin Mower, one of the first lumber barons of the St. Croix Valley.

Mower was responsible for the Arcola Mill and Boat Yard. He also worked to pass legislation that allowed the start-up of the St. Croix Boom Company, and he introduced steam as a power source for lumber operations.

This one-hour presentation will tell facts about Mower’s visionary changes that transformed the St. Croix River, plus local legends and tall tales. The stories are fun and suitable for all ages.

The program is free, but a vehicle sticker is required to enter the park.

William O’Brien State Park is located 2 miles North of Marine on St. Croix on Highway 95. For more information call 651-433-0500.
