Forest Lake junior Toby Boyer worked his way through the first two rounds of the Class AA singles state tennis tournament today at the Baseline Tennis Center in Minneapolis.
Boyer, seeded second, took on sophomore Lucas Conboy of St. Cloud Tech at 8 a.m. and came away with a 6-1, 6-0 win to move to the quarterfinal round against Eagan senior Zach Ekstein.
Despite a slow start during the afternoon matchup, Boyer picked up the pace to solidify a spot in the semifinals with a 6-2, 6-4 victory over Ekstein.
In a surprising twist, the reigning state champion and top seed Joel Richards of Minnetonka was knocked into the consolation bracket after a first-round loss to sophomore Nicholas Beaty of Wayzata. Richards defeated Boyer last season in the singles state championship match after a two-and-a-half hour battle, which went to a tiebreaker round.
Boyer, who has a record of 26-0 this year, faces senior Manfred Barrios of Hopkins at 8 a.m. on Friday, June 6 at the Baseline Tennis Center.
