The VFW Post 4210 baseball team continues to shine this summer as it earned division champion status following the completion of the 2014 regular season last week.
Forest Lake closed league play with a double-header sweep last Thursday in wins over Maple Grove (10-2) and Rogers (6-2). The wins put Post 4210 on top as the No. 1-seed in the District 7 tournament with an overall record of 17-2.
As the highest seed, Forest Lake earned a first-round bye, then kicked off the postseason with a best-of-three series against Legacy Christian on Monday. Forest Lake won both games to advance in the district tournament.
In game one, Luke Wallner pitched a shut out for the 7-0 win over Legacy Christian. He recorded four strikeouts, while Joel Hunt led the offense, going 3-3 with two runs scored and three RBIs.
Forest Lake had no trouble in the second game either, winning 11-1 in five innings.
J.T. DeSmet took the win on the mound with four strikeouts, while Jake Schmitz went 2-3 at the plate with two RBIs and a sacrifice fly ball. Hunt went 1-2 with two walks.
Head coach Kale Henry said his players worked hard to earn the top seed.
“We have a strong offensive team, and our pitching and defense came around a great deal and carried us along with our timely hitting,” Henry said. “They’ve done a great job in ball games all summer long.”
Henry added that other season highlights this summer so far include taking second place at the Blaine tournament and becoming consolation champions in the East Side VFW tournament in St. Cloud.
With other post-season series still in progress, exact times and opponents are yet to be determined for the next round of district playoffs.
