When Chance Norby and Christopher Hoyt set out to renovate their newly purchased building at 143 N. Lake St. in Forest Lake, they didn’t think they would learn so much. Unbeknownst to the duo, hiding under some later additions to the structure was a link the city’s pre-Depression past.
The pair bought the building in May and began making exterior improvements in June, including extensive repair to the roof. During the process, they took down an overhang on the front of the building and found a sign for Emily’s Pamper Parlor Hair Care, a hair salon owned and operated from 1964 to the mid 1980s by Emily Stegner. Stegner, who now owns Gold Dusters Jewelry and Pawn, said she shut down Pamper Parlor when the pawn shop got too busy, but she still treasures the relationships she made with clients over two decades.
