The Forest Lake girls tennis team improved upon its 2016 run in the Section 7AA team tournament by advancing to the quarterfinals.
The Rangers, seeded No. 6 in the 16-team bracket, defeated No. 11 St. Francis 4-3 at home Oct. 4.
Sophomore Jenna Zowin defeated Noelle Meyers 6-1, 6-3 at No. 2 singles and freshman beat Makenna Schadewald 3-6, 6-0, 6-0 at No. 4 singles.
In doubles, the No. 1 duo of seniors Kaitlyn Culver and Avery Jorgenson beat Shelby Reynolds and Sadie Pennebaker 6-1, 6-0. No. 2 seniors Abbi Evans and Carrie Voss beat Emma Arnold and Samantha Johnson 6-2, 6-3.
At No. 1 singles, senior Noelle Gorka lost to Marlis Green 1-6, 7-5, 4-10, while at No. 3 singles senior Annika Lamppa was beaten 4-6, 6-3, 6-10 by Jenna Koch.
At No. 3 doubles, junior Biz Valley and sophomore Sydney Rydell lost to Kylie Bergmann and Grace Thull 6-7 (8-11), 2-6.
The Rangers’ team season ended one day later at No. 3 Princeton. The Rangers had hoped to reverse a 5-2 regular season decision against the Tigers in which four matches went to third-set tiebreakers, but Princeton swept the match 7-0 on Oct. 5.
Select Rangers made their forays into the Section 7AA individual tournament in Elk River Oct. 10. Zowin was the only Ranger to advance past the first round, defeating Big Lake’s Ashley Nelson 1-6, 7-5, 6-3. Zowin lost to Cambridge-Isanti’s Shelby Parent 3-6, 6-2, 2-6 in the second round.
Runquist was beaten 0-6, 1-6 by Aurora Schossow of Princeton. In doubles, Jorgenson and Culver were beaten 3-6, 6-7 (4-7) by Cambridge’s Lauren Kindem and Julia Riviere-Beleta, while Evans and Voss were ousted by Chisago Lakes’ Renae Ingalls and Alice Johnson.
