In two moves last Thursday, the ISD 831 Board of Education took steps
— one that will require public donations and one that is projected to
save money.
The latter move involves a district plan to lease school buses, rather
than purchase units to transport students. This marks the first time
the district has improved its fleet by leasing school buses.

Storm clouds were gathering on Sunday, but that didn't stop some 250 motorcycle riders to converge on Maranatha Assembly of God Church in Wyoming. It was a day for the annual Blessing of Bikes. While the rain which arrived by mid-afternoon may have curtailed some of the planned ride, there was still time for the crowd to enjoy food and music. During the blessing program, East Bethel's Kevin Herman required a double blessing. He took in the event with a riding partner, Izzy, a two-year-old Pomeranian-Yorkie mix. The young dog came decked out in riding duds and eye glasses. Herman used a chest pouch to provide a riding spot for Izzy. (Photo By Cliff Buchan)

A Purple Heart has been presented to Forest Lake resident Command Sgt. Major Lawrence Stenger for wounds suffered while fighting in Afghanistan on July 4, 2007. The medal was presented on Wedneday by Sixth District Congresswoman Michele Bachmann at VFW Post 4210 in Forest Lake. The congresswoman and her office were instrumental in securing the medal for the 47-year-old career Army man who has served in the military for 24 years. He was with the Army's 13th Psychological Operations unit in 2007 when his convoy was attacked with small arms fire and rocket-propelled grenades. One RPG exploded near Stenger and lodged shrapnel in his upper back and neck. The wounded soldier continued to engage the enemy for five hours and the battle yielded several high-priority targets. He was airlifted from the battle scene. Stenger has had several surgeries and some shrapnel remains in his neck. He is now attached with the Army's 5th Division West. He was on his third overseas deployment when he was wounded. During a short program at the VFW on June 2, Rep. Bachmann called Stenger a "true hero" and said she was proud to present the medal which said was "an award not taken lightly." (Photo By Cliff Buchan)

For commuters in the five-county area that makes up the Rush Line
Corridor Task Force, that’s good news. The task force is moving forward
with cooperative agreements with the Met Council for operation of the
bus line and access to federal funds to help cover capital costs, said
Mike Rogers, a senior transportation planner with Ramsey County.
