A new feature at the ninth annual Forest Lake Fly-In last Saturday was a presentation by the BBB Orchestra which played big band music and even motivated a few people to show off their dance moves. Mike Tate, public works director for the city, found the perfect dance partner in Kay Doherty, above, who took a few turns on the dance floor. Doherty and her late husband, Tom, owned the airport before selling it to the city which continues with its planning for an improved and expanded facility.

The road project in Forest Lake to reconstruct Broadway Avenue, which includes the replacement of the bridge over I-35, signalized intersections with accompanying sidewalks and paths continues, and final design is underway. The Washington County Board of Commissioners approved a contract with SRF Consulting Group for $360,000 on Tuesday, Aug. 17 to pay for final design, and a comprehensive communication plan to be carried out throughout construction. A low cloud ceiling put an early damper on the ninth annual Forest Lake Fly-in on Saturday, but by early afternoon the clouds had lifted and scores of airplanes made their way to the Forest Lake. Hundreds were on hand to see the planes, attend the classic car and boat show, dine with the Forest Lake Lions Club and listen to the big band music of the BBB Orchestra. Many of the kids came to see the planes, of course. Here, Collin Lee, 7, right, and friend Cole Gerrell, 4, both of Hugo, get a first hand feel of what it is like to sit in a cockpit. Collin was one year too young to take a Young Eagles ride in a plane but said he planned to return next year. For the first time, the air show was based on the east end of the airport where new hangars have been built and a new airport terminal is under construction. (Photo By Cliff Buchan)

Two men from Forest Lake and one from North Branch escaped serious injury early Thursday morning when their vehicles encountered a wrong way driver on I-35E at CR-96 in White Bear Lake. The crash, reported at 4:22 a.m., claimed the life of James A. Bjoraker, 23, of St. Paul, who was driving north in the southbound lanes of the freeway.
Bjoraker's 2003 Ford Escape collided head-on with a 2003 GMC Sierra driven by Jason C. Haraldson, 37, of Forest Lake, according to the Minnesota State Patrol. The State Patrol said both Matthes and Voight had no apparent injuries.
Police from White Bear Lake and the Ramsey County Sheriff's Office assisted the State Patrol. Southbound I-35E was closed from the Forest Lake split south for about four hours on Thursday morning.
