When Eric Langness lost his seat on the Forest Lake School Board in last fall’s election, he lost any direct say in school board business. But when Langness was one of the 400 district residents called as part of a scientific, random opinion survey, he had plenty to say. Langness went before the school board on May 6 to complain that the survey would yield little scientific data and some questions were in his opinion skewed in an effort to leverage public support for a future operating levy vote. “This survey was terrible,” Langness said, calling it “highly misleading.” Langness reminded the school board that it can not support passage of a school levy as a board and intimated that the survey questions were formed with that intent. The school board in March approved an administrative recommendation to hire Springsted, Inc. to conduct the random opinion survey of future levy and bonding proposals at a cost not to exceed $21,500. Results of the survey will be reported during a school board special meeting at 7 p.m., Tuesday, May 18 at the District Office Building.

The Anoka County Board of Commissioners on Tuesday accepted the resignation of Commissioner Scott LeDoux. LeDoux has represented portions of the cities of Andover and Coon Rapids since first being elected in 2004. Doctors diagnosed LeDoux with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, or ALS, in August of 2008. ALS is a disease of the nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord that control voluntary muscle movement. It is also known as Lou Gehrig's disease.
“This is a very tough day for us as a board, and for Anoka County, but we know Scott needs to focus on his fight with ALS and we are firmly in his corner,” said Board Chair Dennis Berg. Before his election to the county board, LeDoux was best known as a world-class heavyweight boxer whose moniker was ‘The Fighting Frenchman.’ He held his own against some of boxing’s greatest, including bouts with Ali, Spinks, and Foreman.

Quiring said an adult bear and another young bear, presumably the mother and sibling of the dead bear, lingered in the area for a time before moving on.

The weather was fairly good on Thursday for the 2010 National Day of Prayer in Forest Lake. Hundreds came out to Lakeside Memorial Park to hear moving messages offered by area pastors and citizens. LA-TV is selling video copies of the event for a cost of $11 each, and with it running over its hour, Rev. Michael Haseltine of Maranatha Church joked, “Now you’re getting more for your dollar.” National Day of Prayer was designated by the United States Congress and signed into law by President Bill Clinton as a day when people are asked “to turn to God in prayer and meditation.” (Photo by Jennifer Larson)
