Ice racing second nature for FL’s Shane Felegy

268racer.jpgOne answer on Shane Felegy’s Polaris bio page pretty much sums up what it must be like to race snowmobiles for a living.

Forest Lake’s own Shane Felegy will be one of the many drivers at this weekend’s Championship WSA Pro Extreme Racing, which will be held on three 1/2 mile ovals on Forest Lake. “It will be good racing for sure,” Felegy said.

Key figure in drive to fund FL hospital dies

268norman.jpgIt is 10 years this month since the Fairview Lakes Medical Center opened in Wyoming providing medical care to residents of the Forest Lake and Wyoming areas and beyond. In 2008 terms, the Wyoming hospital often carries the tag “new” as the replacement facility for the “old” District Memorial Hospital in Forest Lake. The former Forest Lake hospital closed in 1998 and is now home for Lakes International Language Academy, a Spanish immersion public charter school.

Petersons raising funds for 2008 Breast Cancer 3-Day walk

268petersons.jpgDespite her short battle with breast cancer, Kathy Peterson had never felt fatigued. That was until  she participated in a national fund raiser to draw awareness to the disease. For the second year, Peterson has signed up for the Twin Cities Breast Cancer 3-Day – a 60-mile walk spanning a weekend. Like 2007, her 26-year old daughter, Kristy, will be along for the journey that winds around the metro area.

Proceeds from the sales of “A View From Within” by Forest Lake artist Randy Peterson (left) will go towards beneficiaries of the Twin Cities Breast Cancer 3-Day walk. His wife, Kathy, a three-year cancer survivor, and daughter, Kristy, participated in the event last year.  The two women have already began fund raising for the walk on Sept. 19-21. In 2007, Kathy raised around $2,600 and Kristy about $2,400 for the cause.

Forest Lake City Council is expected to take action next Monday on an appointment to fill the term of Councilman Bo Bogotty’s seat that has been declared vacant. Bogotty suffered a serious stroke in September and is still recovering. The council on Jan. 31completed the last of 14 interviews of city residents who applied to fill the caretaker seat on council. 258mayora.jpgThree days into his quest to raise $35,000 to support the Forest Lake Teen Center, Wyoming Mayor Sheldon Anderson's fund-raiser has topped the $7000 total, thanks in part to $1000 donations from the Hallberg Family Foundation, General Safety Equipment of Wyoming and Forest Lake Council member Susan Young. FL Police tag 17 with DWIs in January

It was a busy month for DWI enforcement in Forest Lake last month as city officers charged 17 motorists with driving while intoxicated, Chief of Police Clark Quiring said on Friday. The arrests include five that took place during the day. The final DWI arrest of the month came at 2:12 p.m. on Thursday when a 44-year-old city woman was arrested in the 20000 block of Georgia Ave. N. Police responded to an anonymous caller who observed the woman's car fail to stop for a stop sign. The incident took place near Forest Lake High School and Century Junior High School, the chief said. The woman tested at .27, three times higher than the state legal DWI limit of .08, the chief said.

City officers also assisted other departments with three additional drunk-driver arrests in the final two days of the month. Two of the arrests involved motorists from Hugo and were in partnership with the Washington County Sheriff's Office. Late Thursday night Forest Lake officers were called to assist the Chisago County Sheriff's Office. At 12:45 a.m. on Friday, city officers stopped a vehicle that had traveled south from Wyoming. The vehicle was stopped on 245th St. in the area that borders on Forest Lake, Columbus and Wyoming Township. The driver was taken to jail in Center City on second-degree DWI, Quiring said. The vehicle driven by the suspect had heavy front-end  and tire damage.
