Former Forest Lake resident Ken Anderson has tied his best-ever finish in the Iditarod sled dog race. The Fairbanks, AK resident was the fourth musher to Nome, where he arrived at 9:25 Tuesday night (Alaska time). The 10-year veteran of the race also came in fourth in 2008. This time, he finished about six-and-a-half hours behind Lance Mackey, who became the first musher to win four straight Iditarods. Anderson, 37, finished the race with 10 of his original 16 dogs.

After two successful years and overflow crowds at the Hardwood Creek
Government Center in Forest Lake, the third Vietnam Veterans Day
program is moving this year.
To accommodate another large crowd, program coordinator Diane Finnemann
has announced the program set for 1:30 p.m., Sunday, March 28 will move to the
auditorium at Forest Lake High School, 6101 Scandia Trail N. (TH-97).

$10,000 — $1 at a time. That’s the goal of a retail fund-raiser for the
Community Scholarship Foundation that kicks off on Saturday.
More than 20 businesses throughout ISD 831 have joined the effort that
will collect donations of all sizes from the general public during the
course of their travels in and out of area stores and offices.

A Linwood Township man was killed on Monday when a tree he was cutting fell on him. According to the Anoka County Sheriff’s Office, Todd William Summer, 45, of 24131 Amazon St. NE, was killed in the accident which happened on Fawn Lake Drive in Linwood.
Summer and two sons, ages 18 and 12, were cutting down a tree around 5 p.m. when the tree became tangled in the branches of nearby trees, the sheriff offiice said. As the man freed the tangled tree, it came back down on him as he tried to run from the falling tree, the sheriff’s office said. In addition to the sheriff’s office, the Linwood Fire Department and North Rescue from Fairview Lakes Medical Center in Wyoming were dispatched to the scene.

The ISD 831 Board of Education and administration will present its budget cutting proposal for public comment at a special meeting at 7 p.m., Tuesday, March 23. The special meeting will take place in the media center at Forest Lake High School, 6101 Scandia Trail N. The district is now in the process of preparing a $3.8 million budget modification for the 2010-2011 school year. Cuts will come in the following areas: Elementary reductions, $1.1 million; Secondary reductions, $1.1 million; District support reductions, $600,000; Unreserved fund balance spend down, $1 million.

The mother of a student at Century Junior High School is demanding an
apology and the clearing of her son’s student file after a series of
disciplinary actions stemming from a school incident in late February.
But Amanda Valencia of Forest Lake said this week she had made little
progress in meetings with school administrators, district
administrators and school board members during the past 10 days.
