The criticism of Forest Lake’s downtown road improvements should have ended last year. In reality, they should have been history in the fall of 2007.

But it hasn’t ended as the Open Forum column of this newspaper has been filled with opinions from area residents who are bemoaning the downtown project. At the center of the debate, of course, is that hated roundabout at Lake and Broadway.

Can this new low for local politics be eclipsed?

It hasn’t been surprising to see low blows and political attacks in local elections. They’ve happened in the Forest Lake area for years.

There have been rare occasions when letter-to-the-editor writers have been able to slip through false claims and opinions. A number of  years ago one letter slipped through that was written by a person who used someone else’s name. There was a more recent case when a writer used a pen name and managed to get a letter printed.
