Taylor grabs endorsement in 17B
498taylor.jpgDon Taylor will be the standard bearer for the Republican Party in House District 17B. Taylor, the Chisago City mayor, won his party’s endorsement at the District 17 Convention Saturday in North Branch. On the fourth round of balloting, Taylor garnered 62 percent of the delegate vote to win the endorsement. He topped Wyoming Mayor Sheldon Anderson, Taylors Falls resident Warren Nelson and Lindstrom resident John Stignani for the endorsement. Anderson, who earlier hinted he may force a primary contest, said this week he will abide by the party decision. Anderson said he will consider a bid for a third two-year term as mayor.  Barring an unforeseen primary contest, Taylor will now go on to challenge Rep. Jeremy Kalin, DFL-North Branch, this November.

FLHS Ghost Out is April 17th
As an effort to demonstrate the negatives alcohol-related traffic deaths, students at Forest Lake High School will take part in the annual Ghost Out on Thursday, April 17. The Ghost Out is part of the school’s alcohol and drug awareness program aimed at teenagers because traffic crashes are the number one killer of teens and more than one-third of teen traffic deaths are alcohol related, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Students will distribute literature concerning teenage drivers with the brochures to include facts on the hazards and consequences of operating a vehicle while under the influence and importance of wearing safety belts. The Ghost Out also involves a student dressed as the “Grim Reaper” who stalks the hallways of the school and selects 15 “victims" who represent the average number of people killed in alcohol or drug-related crashes during a school day.

Web page designed for teen drivers

While teenagers look forward to getting a driver’s license, their parents often face this juncture of their children’s lives with fear and trepidation. Car accidents are a leading cause of severe injuries and death among teenagers all across the United States. Jerry Hendrickson, of Security-Victor Insurance Agency, Wyoming, is committed to changing that trend since he had clients whose children were killed in  automobile accidents.  He recently launched a website for parents of teen drivers, www.teendriverinsurance.com/svi.

People who subscribe through the website will automatically receive a free monthly e-zine, called the “Driver’s Seat.” Access to this information-rich website is free. Hendrickson cites among the most important no-cost tools are an online driver safety course; a brochure listing more than 100 teen driver safety tips and a teen driver/parent driving contract; parent testimonials; links to Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, the Minnesota State Department of Motor Vehicles, and other organizations that provide helpful information as parents navigate their way through their teens’ early driving years; and information about how parents can keep a watchful eye even when they are not in the car with their teens.
