Kindergarten screening set May 15
Forest Lake Area Schools has set May 15 for early entrance screening for kindergarten. Parents who believe their child has advanced intellectual ability and language development, and is not five-years-old on or before September 1, 2008, may apply for early entrance. The cost to have your child screened is $350. To request an application form, contact Gwen Patrick at 651-982-8155. Forms must be completed and returned with a $350 check to the Director of Teaching and Learning, 6100 N 210th St, Forest Lake MN 55025 by May 8.
 
Terry Smith named to state board
Gov. Tim Pawlenty has named former Forest Lake Mayor Terry Smith to serve on a state board. On Monday, Pawlenty announced that Smith was one of eight appointed to the State Rehabilitation Council. Smith, of Forest Lake, is the owner and operator of Tek-Smith Furniture Service, LLC. He served as a Forest Lake City Council member from 1998-2002 and as the mayor from 2004-2006. Smith is a current board member of the Governor’s Workforce Development Council, and is appointed to serve as the GWDC representative on the council. He is appointed to a three-year term that expires January 3, 2011 and replaces Rod Haworth. The State Rehabilitation Council is created under state law and the Federal Rehabilitation Act. The council assists the Rehabilitation Services Program of the Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development in making decisions about the state’s Vocational Rehabilitation Services Program. Vocational rehabilitation serves thousands of persons with severe disabilities throughout the state, helping them reach their vocational goals. The council is made up of 19 members appointed by the governor.
 
Surgeon joins staff at Fairview Lakes in Wyoming
Fairview Lakes Health Services has announced the addition of a fourth general surgeon, Dr. Lan Raikar. Dr. Raikar received her medical degree from the University of Nebraska,  Medical  Center, in  Omaha and completed her general surgery residency at the Mayo Clinic in  Rochester in 1991. For one year she lived in  California where she assisted her husband, who is a cardiac surgeon. But California, didn’t “feel like home,” she says, so the couple moved back to Minnesota when her husband’s parents moved to Eau Claire, WI. The couple has three sons, ages 8, 9 and 12. Prior to joining Fairview Lakes Medical Center in Wyoming,  Dr. Raikar practiced part-time at St. Croix Regional Medical Center in Wisconsin. At Fairview, Dr. Raikar will perform a wide variety of surgical procedures and specialize in breast cancer surgery and vein surgery. Dr. Raikar sees patients in the specialty clinic where she joins general surgeons Stuart Sybesma, M.D., Randall Ewald, M.D., and Lawrence Biel, M.D., and head and neck surgeon Todd Lindquist, M.D.
 
Purdy hosts investment session May 8
Dave Purdy, president of Wealth Management Midwest, LLC, 20 N. Lake St., will host a two-part educational event on Thursday, May 8 at Stars & Strikes Entertainment Center, 5063 273rd St., Wyoming. The public is invited to attend this free event that will include a 20-minute presentation, “Investing in America — Real Estate,” featuring Inland Securities Corporation. The second part of the May 8 event is wine tasting, featuring Robert Marx, of MT Global Wines, an importer of fine wines. Registration on May 8 begins at 6:30 with the program starting at 7. Presentation on youth and technology April 21
The Internet isn’t any safer because it’s accessed over a computer. Actually, it can be just as dangerous as the world we live in.

But a free presentation on Monday, April 21 from 6:30-8:30 p.m., in the media center at the Forest Lake High School may help parents protect and educate their children in an age of technology. The event is co-sponsored by Promoting Positive Parenting, Community Education departments from school districts 622, 831, 832 and 834, as well as the Chemical Health Action Collaborative in Washington County.

Speakers are Dr. Peggy Kendall, a professor in Communication Studies at Bethel University, and Washington County Sheriff’s Office Det. Tim Harris. He is also a member of the Minnesota Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force.

Student held on drug charge

A student at Forest Lake High School was arrested last Friday on a felony third-degree drug charge.

Police were called to the school at 12:06 p.m. to assist staff who were dealing with a female student from Lino Lakes who appeared to be under the influence of narcotics. Chief of Police Clark Quiring said a white powdery substance that tested positive for methamphetamine was found in the student’s purse.

Forest Lake Ford closes April 9; FL’s Big Dollar Store in last days

Wednesday, April 9 was the end of the line for Forest Lake Ford, 231 SW 19th St.

The car dealership officially went out of business last week and by Friday, most of the remaining inventory of cars and trucks had been hauled away.
