Oberstar corners TH-95 funding
When it comes to highway funding dollars, someone’s loss will be North Branch’s gain, or so it seems. Eighth District Congressman James Oberstar announced that more than $11 million in unused transportation funds have been redirected  to four projects in northeast Minnesota, including the TH-95 bridge project over I-35 in North Branch. North Branch will receive some $7.1 million for the design  and construction of a new bridge on TH-95. “The 2005 transportation law was a $286 billion piece of legislation  that authorized thousands of transportation projects across the nation; it was bound to need a few adjustments,” Oberstar said. “In some cases, the money could not be used by the programs that were authorized to receive it, so I was able to redirect some of those funds to other worthy Minnesota projects.” Sixth District Congresswoman Michele Bachmann was also in support of the action, said Stephen Miller, her communications director.

FL FFA among state’s top 10
The Forest Lake High School FFA chapter has been named one of the state’s 10 best and placed fourth overall. The recognition was based on an application submitted by the students which identified successful activities in the areas of student, chapter and community development. These activities and the supporting documentation were evaluated by a state committee and compared to more than 190 other Minnesota Chapters. The application will now be submitted to the National FFA for further evaluation and potential recognition. “This is a result of a group effort of members, parents, school faculty and administration, and community support,” said Mike Miron one of three agricultural education instructors and FFA advisors. The chapter was also recognized for contributions made to the community as one of 10 finalists in the Minnesota FFA Land of 10,000 Service Hour Challenge. FFA members earned this honor as a result of their efforts on community landscaping projects, agriculture in the classroom activities, agriculture awareness events, adopt a family food drives and a variety of other events designed to enhance the school and area.
