Central Montessori School accepting new students
Central Montessori Elementary School, which is part of the Forest Lake Area School District, is still accepting registration for its 2008-2009 all-day kindergarten through sixth grade program.The school is a unique, modified-Montessori school focused on meeting the needs of all learners. It offers students the proven quality of the district’s curriculum, blended with the interactive, Montessori educational strategies. The school features multi-age classrooms, individual attention and small class sizes. Teachers creatively teach to guide students on learning adventures. The school is located in the Central Learning Center, 200 SW 4th St. Free transportation is provided for students living within the Forest Lake district. FLHS FFA chapter is region’s best
Forest Lake FFA members and advisors traveled to Howard Lake-Waverly-Winsted High School for the annual Region IV banquet and awards program where the group was recognized as the region’s top chapter and were awarded the Dahlberg trophy for 2007-2008. This acknowledgment was a result of the leadership, involvement, professional development activities, and career exploration efforts. The chapter also received the W. J. Kortesmaki award for being the most improved chapter and was recognized as the most active in career development event activities. “This group of FFA members is energetic, active, motivated, and have worked together as a team,” said FFA advisor and agricultural education department chair Bob Marzolf. The  application will now advance to state competition during the Minnesota FFA Convention this month. Other highlights from the banquet included: Nicky Johnson, 3rd in talent; Alex Murdock, 3rd in the reporter’s contest; Erin Daninger, 2nd in advanced floral design; Hannah Taylor, 3rd in novice floral design; 1st place, treasurer’s book; 2nd place website; 3rd place scrapbook; 3rd place secretary’s book.
 
Republicans unanimously endorse Bachmann
Sixth District Congresswoman Michele Bachmann, R-Stillwater, was endorsed by unanimous acclaim at the Republican Congressional Convention in Blaine on Saturday, April 5.

Bachmann, 52, sometimes wiping tears from her eyes, in her endorsement speech told delegates “we are lovers of freedom.”

Wyoming students will travel to Europe

No, they’ll actually visit those far-off destinations this summer as part the People to People Student Ambassador Program July 2-21

Rhea Voss (left) and Tyler Boyce, 6th graders at Wyoming Elementary School, have been selected to be delegates for the People to People Student Ambassador Program. They are raising funds for their tuition costs at the Wyoming PTA Carnival at the school on Saturday, April 12.

FL grad Jim Bullard heads Federal Reserve in St. Louis

489jimbullard.jpgDr. James B. Bullard, a native of Forest Lake, has been appointed president and chief executive officer of the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis by the bank’s board of directors.

Board Chairman Irl F. Engelhardt said the appointment occurred after an extensive search by the board and was approved by the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System.

Dr. Bullard assumed his new position on April 1. He succeeds William Poole, who will retire as St. Louis Fed president on March 31 after serving in the position for 10 years.

Dr. James Bullard, a Forest Lake High School graduate, is now head of the Federal Reserve Bank in St. Louis, MO. He assumed his new duties on April 1.

Comedian Scott Hansen, who has been named Minnesota Comedian of the Year five times, will appear in Wyoming on Friday, April 18 at a benefit for the St. John’s Academy and Little Angel Pre-school.

Home foreclosures in FL expected to rise this year

The number of expected home foreclosures in the Forest Lake area this year is a crisis of great magnitude.

Rich Malloy, deputy executive director for Washington County Housing and Redevelopment Authority, updated the Forest Lake City Council on recent foreclosure figures during it’s regular meeting on March 24.

Planners give expertise in Wyoming annexation case

Planning consultants offered their expertise, during the annexation hearings last week in the bids by Stacy and Chisago City to annex land from Wyoming Township.

The first to testify was Ciara Schlichting of Bonestroo, Rosene, Anderlink, and Associates, who was called as an expert witness for Chisago City.  Schlichting said  Chisago City has purposefully planned extra-territorially “proactively considering connections beyond borders.” Its 2002 comprehensive plan included part of the contested annexation plan.
