The King and I (& the web)
I
typically try to avoid spouting off about national sports topics in
this space. There’s already millions of columns, broadcasts and blogs
put out there by real experts on those affairs.
However, I did have a sort of “coming of age” moment awhile back that I feel compelled to chronicle. You know the type of awakening I’m talking about – where a moment of
clarity emerges in the middle of a mundane, everyday task. Or as one of
the famous evening news programs calls it, a “sign of the times.”

How do you match a historic season? Win, a lot
It was another golden spring for Forest Lake athletics. Click here for a slideshow.
Clint Riese
Sports Editor
Nothing against the good people of the southwest metro, but I’ve slowly
developed a disliking for some of the more well-to-do suburbs. It seems
like at every state tournament I go to, it’s Eden Prairie and Wayzata,
Wayzata and Eden Prairie. I know having 3,000 kids to pick from helps,
but are there any sports these schools are not good at?
Call it jealousy from a sore loser if you want, but just like the Yankees, Lakers and Duke, everybody loves to hate the winners.
But if Forest Lake isn’t careful, opponents are going to start sneering
at the Rangers. For the second straight spring, the maroon and gold has
been right in the mix at nearly every state meet.

Seventeen innings for deep thoughts
Clint Riese
Sports Editor
You come to realize a lot of things at a 17-inning softball
game. Time is not in short supply, so there’s ample opportunity for
reflection.
Forest Lake’s epic loss to Hastings on Monday – while thrilling –
seemed like a whole season wrapped into one game. It lasted three
hours, just longer than an average baseball game. But when softball
games usually wrap up in seven innings and about 75 minutes, three
hours might as well have been 13.

Much ballyhooed Target Field lives up to the hype
The buzz surrounding the opening of Target
Field has been justifiably loud. Starting about March, it seemed there
were front page articles daily in the big papers with behind-the-scenes
tidbits on everything from the scoreboard to the groundskeeper.
Many of Target Field’s features, like the illuminated sign in right field, deserve an up-close look.

Seedy seeding process puts FL in corner
My
excitement from Friday’s thrilling section championship game had yet to
die down when the results of Saturday’s seeding meeting hit me like a
ton of bricks. The Rangers will meet...[drumroll]...No. 1
Hopkins...[drumroll]...at 10 in the morning.
Ouch.

I'm happy to be wrong
One of the great rights and duties of a sports columnist is to throw
caution to the wind and cast fearless opinions out for all to read and
ridicule. Naturally, we’re wrong a lot. From the typos we print to picking the
wrong games to cover, we’re often left banging our heads on the wall. So I’ll be the first to admit I was wrong when it comes to this year’s basketball boys.
