Norman Tolzmann — a man who had his own personality
It was easy to remember the birthday of Norman Tolzmann, lifelong Forest Lake area resident. Just ask Norm and he would tell you that his birthday was the last day of August, Aug. 31. He would also say that he was the last of four children to be born to August Tolzmann. Thus, he was the last of August, literally.

Grandfather wasn’t last in his lifelong mission to America
One of the last. The last veteran from his outfit living from China-Burma-India. The last of 15 siblings. The last living charter member of the Forest Lake VFW.

One thing he wasn’t last in? His mission to let Americans know how his war experiences and other veterans’ contributions affect the ordinary people through the book he wrote.  Though never published, my grandpa wanted to make sure that everyone knew how military sacrifices, including his own, have given us the freedom we enjoy today.
