Recently our lovely neighborhood came smack dab, face to face with “progress” in the form of two 54 foot high apartment buildings plus 18,000 square feet of commercial space -- right in our backyard! The name of this proposed development is Everton Commons. In the process of this battle over rezoning requests to turn land now zoned low density into high density zoning, our neighborhood group has discovered that developers believe that the Woodbury model needs to come to Forest Lake. We take that to mean that they think we ought to look like Woodbury. Ugh!

There are bills in the Minnesota Legislature to lower the drinking age to 18. As Minnesota wrestles with the problem of teen drunken driving deaths, binge drinking and an increase in high school student drinking, it makes little sense to make legal drinking easier and earlier.

We have heroes among us — it’s the men and women who serve(d) our country! I have had the privilege to speak at the American Legion Post 225 several times and have been invited multiple times to the VFW. These are America’s heroes. Every time I walk through the doors of these organizations I take time to look at the walls decorated with history.
I am humbled in the presence of those who sacrificed so much for us. As I talk to these men and women, they are proud of America and collectively they represent the freedom we all love.

It may have just been ironic that community members, veterans and students came together on Saturday at the new Forest Lake branch library for the state’s first observance of the newly created Vietnam Veterans Day.
It may have just been coincidence that members of the Forest Lake Lions and American Legion Post 225 partnered last Thursday for the club’s annual Liberty Day education program for students, this time at Columbus Elementary School.

In recent days, Forest Lake High School has been labeled “unpatriotic” and “un-American,” district leaders have been called “cowards,” and rumors and innuendo have spread like wildfire. A school, a district, and an entire community with a proud tradition of honoring military heroes and celebrating our American freedoms have been drug through the mud locally and nationally.
