Like every other sport this spring, the Forest Lake girls track and field team had to deal with its share of poor weather, which would adversely affect everyone’s performance.
At last week’s Suburban East Conference championships, the Rangers were able to compete in nice conditions, and head coach Eric Kaluza thought his squad had great results; coming in seventh place with 70 points.
“The pole vaulters were awesome,” he said. “Taylor Brett is closing in on 10 feet and Christy’s (Newell) nine foot mark was a big boost after taking a year off from it.”
While the 400- and 800-meter relay teams could do no better than a pair of fifth-place finishes, Kaluza felt they had solid marks.
“Each can drop substantial time going into regions,” he shared.
“The 4x400 was just a gas. We took sixth but each runner — Annie Dehmlow, Gina Lange, Elizabeth Peterson and Calley Jones — did phenomenal.”
Lange had already competed in three events, Peterson passed two runners, and Jones was dealing with a hip injury.
Kristie Miller proved that she is one of the best in the state, grabbing three all-conference awards, plus running in the 400-meter relay.
“Rae Moen was key in the 100, 200, and 4x100,” Kaluza said,” “(And) Erin Daninger and Gaby Selg looked good in the disc.”
With sections getting underway on Wednesday in Elk River and closing out Saturday, Kaluza thinks his team is progressing well.
