Ask and you shall receive.

One week after Forest Lake High School Activities Director Joel Olson joked about how he was hoping the boys golf team could deliver section and state trophies to go along with their conference award, the Rangers came through with the Section 7AAA title on Monday, May 26.

Actually, while the official winner at Grand National Golf Club wasn’t announced until Monday, the boys locked up this championship when the tournament opened last Wednesday.

Forest Lake had shot a team total of 291, with Princeton coming in second, 13 shots back. It would have taken a monumental collapse on Memorial Day for the Rangers to miss out on a return trip to state, and instead of being challenged, the boys created more space.

They added eight more strokes to their lead and finished at 590. Princeton wound up falling off the pace and came in at 611.

What makes Forest Lake so hard to beat is that any golfer can win the entire tournament, which translates into a group of Rangers lingering near the top of the leader board.

“The first day John Young shot three-under 69,” head coach John Buck shared. “Peter Follese had a one-under 71.”

When the teams returned on May 26, it was Jeremy Tetrault who would fire Forest Lake’s low round with a 73, followed by Follese’s 74 and Andrew Kelly’s 75.

Balance, depth, whatever you want to call it, it’s a desirable quality to have on a team.

And while Tetrault was turning in a 75 in Round One, Paul Moberg was shooting a 76, to send the team to the season’s best, three-over 291.

“In the brisk winds and surprising chill we finished the deal by shooting 299 for a 590 total,” Buck noted about Day Two.

Follese’s 74 gave him second place overall (145), and right behind him was Young in third at 146.

Tetrault was next, in a tie for seventh (148), and then Kelly (156), Moberg (158) and Doug Jeans (158) closed out with Kelly taking 18th place, and Moberg and Jeans tying for 19th.

The state tourney runs from Tuesday, June 3 to Wednesday, June 4 at Bunker Hills.

Olson may have already cleared a spot in his office.
