At the Section 7AAA girls golf tournament, Forest Lake head coach Joel Hall was both suffering from, and enjoying, a healthy dose of flashbacks.

After falling behind by six strokes to Grand Rapids in Round One on May 21, the Rangers had to pull together in the second round on Memorial Day to win by three shots and secure a return trip to state.

“It seems like I am having deja vu, but we pulled it out,” Hall said, referring to last season’s second-day surge.

“The girls wanted to leave it on the course and walk away without wishing or hoping that they could do anything differently, and that is what they did.”

When last Wednesday’s round was complete, Hall was confident his squad would rebound, but he also admitted he would get very little sleep waiting for Monday to finally come around.

But after coming off the course at Grand National Golf Club in Hinckley, Hall was able to see all six of his golfers in the top 25, led by Betsy Kelly’s winning total of 149 (71-78).

Mallory Messin pulled in to second with a steady 81-80 (161), and then came Emily Wislicenus (90-84) in seventh place.

With a five-shot improvement from the first day, Brittany Seifert wound up in 14th (97-92-189), while Katie Nowicki was another consistent golfer, going 97-96 (193).

Lauren Gravelle capped off the Forest Lake scores with a 207 (101-106).

“I am so proud of this group, and I am so fortunate that I get to say I am their coach,” Hall said. “What a group.”

Hall and the girls will be back at Bunker Hills for the state tournament, beginning Tuesday, June 3, and wrapping up on June 4.
