Hugo expecting close to 1000 volunteers for tornado clean-up on Saturday PDF Print
Thursday, 29 May 2008
City of Hugo officials said on Thursday they expect between 800 and 1000 volunteers to converge on their city Saturday morning to help with tornado debris clean-up. Acting Mayor Becky Petryk said volunteers have been asked to meet at the Washington County Government Center in the Forest Lake Headwaters development before 8 a.m. where shuttle buses will transport workers to a number of sites where debris must be removed. All volunteers will given a brief orientation and asked to sign a liability release statement in the event of an injury. Tetnus booster shots will be offered to those who need them, she said. Shuttle buses will run from the government center to the clean-up sites between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Volunteers will not be allowed to drive to the clean-up zone. City officials said on Thursday that the first building permits needed in the reconstruction effort will be issued on Monday and additional staff will be on hand to help speed the process. Officials also said  the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources was at Oneka Lake to begin cleaning the lake which was littered with debris from the homes hit by the F3 tornado late Sunday afternoon. For more information or to volunteer to help, call Hugo City Hall at 651-762-6300. The next town hall meeting with the city council is set for 7 p.m., Monday, June 2 at Hugo City Hall.
