The community drive to fund the 2008 American Legion Post 225 Independence Day parade and fireworks is closing in on its goal, but is still short of the $35,000 tally needed.
Krista Richter, committee chair, said the community has provided just under $30,000 to date through a series of fund-raisers this winter and spring.
Two events are on tap this weekend that should help the drive. Friar Tucks in Forest Lake will host its all-day garbage dumpster-hot tub party on Saturday with proceeds going to the Legion fund-drive.
Running Aces Harness Park in Columbus is sponsoring a harness race match Friday night between Columbus Mayor Mel Mettler and Forest Lake Mayor Stev Stegner. Guests to the track can make donations or $1 bets on the outcome with all proceeds slated for the Legion drive.
Those who pick the winning mayor can submit their ticket for a comlimentary cookie.
