After a two-year stay at city hall, a plaque honoring Forest Lake’s war dead from World War I to 1977 was returned to Lakeside Memorial Park on July 4th. The plaque, a 1976 Bicentennial project of the Forest Lake Area Chamber of Commerce, was placed on a limestone rock near the gazebo. A number of relatives of the fallen comrades attended the program, including Luella Johnson, left, of Scandia. Her son, Barton Johnson, was killed in Vietnam. His sister, Wendy Wojtowicz, center, and cousin Dianne Johnson, were also on hand for the rededication. Ron Miller of American Legion Post 225 and Lee Goodyear, commander of VFW Post 4210 unveiled the marker at its new location in the park. Through the Chamber with the help of local businesses, the military organizations hope to place a new and larger memorial for the park which will honor all fallen veterans from the Forest Lake area. Forest Lake High School graduate Army Pfc. Eldon Arcand, who was killed in Iraq in 2005, was given special recognition during the program.
