Council votes 3-2 for full Wyoming election PDF Print

Wyoming City Council on Tuesday night by way of a 3-2 vote agreed to an amendment to the orderly annexation agreement between the city and Wyoming Township that calls for the full election of the five-member council. The action follows last Friday's ruling in the Chisago City hostile annexation case that sent another 1200 acres from Wyoming Township to Chisago City

While the city and township are still independent a decision needed to be reached about how to elect city council for the expanded city. The original agreement calls for two council members to resign and be replaced by appointment of two township supervisors.

The amendment explained by Attorney Tim Sime recognizes the upcoming general election and opens all seats on the council to election. The filing period for the November general election is August 26 through September 9.

Scheduled for election right now are the mayor (two-year term), and the seats occupied by Tom LaBarre and Blake Tiedeman (both four-year seats).

The amendment would open all seats for election. Two council seats would be designated for four-year terms, two designated for two-year terms, and the office of mayor would be a two-year term. The two candidates receiving the highest number of votes would be appointed to four-year terms.  The two receiving the next highest number of votes would win two-year terms.

The mayor’s term would continue as in the past.

Tiedeman said he believes it is in the best interest of the joint resolution to hold elections this way.  It provides for “fair representation for all,” according to LaBarre.

Council members Joe Zerwas and Gary Menne were opposed to the amendment.  Both have two full years remaining on their terms.

The amendment was passed by a margin of 3-2, with Menne and Zerwas voting against and Anderson, Tiedeman and LaBarre in favor.

Wyoming Township will consider the same amendment at a special meeting tonight.
