by Howard Lestrud Why volunteer? Just ask Karen Morehead of Forest Lake and she will give you many reasons. It’s because she believes strongly in the cause she is helping at the time. That cause this week is the Republican Party and the Republican National Convention at the Xcel Energy Center, St. Paul. She is working at the Quest Center registering volunteers. The volunteer support comes in the form of security, site operations, transportation and ADA. Morehead has been active in the Republican Party since the beginning of the Reagan years in 1980. She has attended all local and state conventions since that time. She says she firmly believes in the Republican Platform. The Republican activist from Forest lake said she came into Republican politics because of the Pro Life issue. She said since she has been active in the Party she has found other issues to embrace. Karen is not the only Forest Lake area Republican working at the RNC. Barbara Grams, Wyoming, has been working side by side with Morehead in registering volunteers and also helped Morehad in registration processing at the Phyllis Schlaffly event at the Crown Plaza Hotel on Tuesday. Retired Col. James Noll, Forest Lake, also assisted at the Schlaffly rally. He, in fact, helped peacefully escort a protester off stage after she held up a poster while interrupting Schlaffly’s address. Forest Lake residents Dick and Pat LaMere also worked the convention, helping with delegates at a hotel in Arden Hills. While graciously going through registrations for reporting volunteers, Morehead shows a personal interest in each one. She definitely takes seriously every volunteer event she works. Even though she is not a convention delegate, Karen has had the opportunity to participate in the evening convention activities. Prior to Sen. John McCain’s speech on Thursday night, a convention highlight was Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin’s speech to the delegates. Morhead praises the team of McCain and Palin. She said Palin “certainly is a wonderful addition” to the presidential ticket. “Her speech was totally electifying,” said Morehead. She said she has felt that excitement ever since she was announced as McCain’s running mate. Due to concern about Hurricane Gustav, convention activities slowed on Monday to place concern on those affected by the storm. Morehead praised the efforts of many who raised money for the storm-riddled area. The convention was “right back on target” on Tuesday, said Morehead. She said her volunteer work day is the same every day, working from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Most of the volunteers are Minnesotans. She says she totally has enjoyed her work at the RNC and enjoys working with people who have similar beliefs. She called Wyoming neighbor and friend Barbara Grams an outstanding volunteer. Karen believes strongly in the Republican Party and is not afraid to give a needle to those in another party. The other day she sent a convention post card to some friends of another party, saying “Wish you were here.” Following the convention Karen immediately began work for the Republican ticket. She said she is confident the Republican ticket will make a comfortable and safe country for all of us. |
