Basketball Alumni Tournament
The 2007-08 Forest Lake basketball alumni tournament will be Saturday, Dec. 22 at Forest Lake High School. The cost is $120 per team. Three games guaranteed, and each player on the championship team receives a Ranger Alumni Champion T-shirt (The Dan Ryan Team is the two-time defending champs). Blue Line Club's alumni game
In anticipation of the annual alumni hockey game on Saturday, Dec. 22, the Forest Lake Blue Line club is looking for male hockey alumni. It is expected to be the final alumni game played at the Maroon and Gold Arena, so the Club is planning for a nice turnout. New endangered wolves arrived
On Wednesday, Dec. 12, at the Wildlife Science Center in Forest Lake, three new endangered Mexican Gray Wolves arrived. The Wildlife Science Center added the Mexican gray wolves in an attempt to assist government reintroduction efforts. These three females will participate in ground-breaking studies designed to understand the crisis facing this rare canine. PGA golf card stocking stuffers
The 2008 Minnesota Golf Card is now available, with more than 150 golf facilities to choose from. The price is still just $30, and people in the Forest Lake area can get theirs from the boys and girls golf teams. Girls head coach Joel Hall can be reached at 651-982-3083, or boys head coach John Buck's phone number is 651-982-8431. Both teams are selling the PGA golf cards, with checks payable to FLHS Golf. Ultimate winter survival for youth
For boys and girls searching for something fun and different to do during the holiday break, Warner Nature Center is having Ultimate Winter Survival for 9-11 year-olds on Saturday, Dec. 29, from 9:15 a.m. – 3:15 p.m. Registration deadline: Dec. 26.
Try out your survival skills in the winter woods of Warner. Join them as they put on snowshoes to trek through the woods; build a giant quinzhee snow shelter while enjoying a day of winter fun. This is a great way to have your child supervised, learning and having fun if you can’t be with them during their time away from school. The cost is $44 WNC Friends/SMM members; $50 nonmembers (ages 9-11). Pre-registration and pre-payment are required for all Warner events. Hockey association nominations
At the meeting to be held on Wednesday, Dec. 19, the Forest Lake Hockey Association will be taking nominations to fill open positions on the following committees:
Coaches Selection Committee - three open positions. This committee consists of two C-level directors, two travel members and one member at large.
Rules committee – two open positions. This committee consists of a house parent, a traveling parent, a house and traveling coach and a member at large.
Nominations can be made by the Board or from the floor. The members are elected by majority vote of the board. Any questions, please feel free to contact any board member.
Scandia winter rec programs
The City of Scandia’s Park and Recreation Committee is planning winter fun for all ages, so get out and enjoy the snow with your friends and neighbors. Registration is now open for Scandia Day at Trollhaugen in Dresser, WI — a snow-tubing event for all ages, on Saturday, Dec. 29 from 1 to 4 p.m. The tubing hill will be reserved for this group at a special $11 per person, $5 for ages 5 and under. Tubes are provided; ride the moving sidewalk back up the hill. Registration deadline is Wednesday, Dec. 26, 2007.
Registration is also open for the after-school learn-to-skate program, which starts on Jan. 9 and 10. On Wednesdays, “Hot Shot Kids” in grades 3 through 6 will learn the basics of ice hockey. On Thursdays, Grades K-3 will learn techniques of pleasure skating for fun or fitness. The $25 cost for the six-week sessions include transportation from Scandia Elementary School to the Wojtowicz Skating Park at the Scandia Community Center. Registration deadline is Tuesday, Jan. 1, 2008.
Pre-registration for the tubing event and skating program is required. Detailed information and registration forms are available on the city’s website at www.ci.scandia.mn.us.
FLAAA meets on 2nd Tuesday
The FLAAA holds its regular monthly meeting the second Tuesday of each month at The Cornerstone in Wyoming at 7 p.m. Questions about the FLAAA or meetings call Terri or Larry Porter at 651-464-8094. The next meeting is Tuesday, Jan 8.
FLAFA meetings scheduled
The Forest Lake Fastpitch Association (FLAFA) holds its monthly meeting on the third Thursday of each month at Dummys at 7 p.m. The next meeting is Thursday, Jan. 17.
Sled Dog Race volunteers
It should be an action-packed weekend February 1, 2 and 3, 2008. The Apostle Islands Sled Dog Race in Bayfield Wisconsin, invites all to volunteer and experience the Midwest’s largest and most exciting sled dog races. Over 100 sled dog teams come to Bayfield to compete in this top event. Volunteers can pick their job — handle dogs by helping mushers hook up their teams, or help bring teams up to the starting chute. Volunteers may also choose to assist at check points, communicate via radio on teams’ progress, guide teams to stay on course, or help enter final times after the race. This opportunity will give people the chance to experience Bayfield in a completely different way: as a part of an annual community event. Select a wonderful vacation package that combines the excitement of the sled dogs, and also time to enjoy the magic of the snowy season in the north woods. Packages include; two or three nights lodging, a spaghetti dinner on Friday night, a “Musher Mixer” on Saturday night, and breakfast each morning. Volunteers will have the opportunity to work on one or both days of the races. These packages are priced at $250 per couple for two nights and $325 per couple for three nights.
