Wednesday, 08 October 2008
Forest Lake resident Tom Waldren has been named to serve on the board of directors of the Minnesota Lions Eye Bank, Inc.

The chief estimator and metal building division manager for the Greystone Contruction Company of Shakopee, Waldren serves as president of the Forest Lake Lions Club.

As an eye bank board member, Waldren will oversee Lions’ funding for the eye bank and report on eye bank activities to the Lions of Minnesota. He will promote the eye bank and other sight programs at the University of Minnesota to fellow Lions and to the community.

Part of University of Minnesota’s Department of Ophthalmology, the Minnesota Lions Eye Bank serves the people of Minnesota by recovering and distributing donated eye tissue for use in sight-saving corneal transplants and other eye surgeries, teaching, and research.

The tenth largest eye bank in the world, the Minnesota Lions Eye Bank has supplied more than 20,000 corneas for transplant since its founding in 1960.

“Serving as a director on the Minnesota Lions Eye Bank board is a great honor for a Lion,” said Richard Reger, board chair. “The eye bank and the ophthalmology doctors and researchers at the University help so many people each year. The Lions are very proud to be a part of this wonderful work.”

Minnesota Lions give generously to many University sight programs, and Waldren will regularly review grant requests from the Lions Children’s Eye Clinic, the Lions Macular Degeneration Center, and from scientists at the Lions Research Building. The Lions have donated more than $18 million to the people of Minnesota through sight-related endeavors at the University.
