Explore history’s footpath to the past during October at WCHS sites PDF Print
Wednesday, 08 October 2008
As the leaves turn crimson and gold, October is a beautiful time to journey to the past and explore the popular historical sites maintained and operated by the Washington County Historical Society.

The Warden’s House Museum in Stillwater and Hay Lake School Museum in Scandia will be open through the end of October. October is the final month for the public to visit the special sesquicentennial exhibits at the two museums.

The Warden’s House Museum is open Thursday-Sunday from 1-5 p.m. The museum, built in 1853 as the residence of the Minnesota Territorial Prison warden, consists of 14 rooms decorated in the late 19th and early 20th century style.

Many rooms represent an upper middle class household of the period, while other rooms depict certain historic Washington County themes. One room is dedicated to the lumbering industry while another showcases items that children used when Minnesota became a state.

The Hay Lake School Museum in Scandia is open Saturday-Sunday from 1-4 p.m. The beautiful and serene museum site includes the one-room Hay Lake School, built in 1896, and the Johannes Erickson Log Home, erected in 1868.

Together, the buildings illustrate pioneer life for the area’s 19th-century Scandinavian immigrants.

Group tours can be scheduled anytime throughout the week by calling the Warden’s House at 651-439-5956 or the Hay Lake School at 651-433-4014.

Visit www.wchsmn.org throughout the year for the latest exciting news about Washington County’s unique place in Minnesota history.
