The sight of a dead or injured deer on the road is not uncommon. In most cases, the animal is at the end of its life, but not always.

Police in Forest Lake found that to be the case last Thursday morning when they were called to the intersection of NW 3rd Street and 2nd Avenue where an injured fawn was down in the roadway.

Sgt. Ron Hanegraaf said an officer was sent to the scene with the likely task of having to dispatch the injured animal which had been hit by a car.

But on occasion, the plans change.

Hanegraaf said as the officer arrived on the scene, the young deer got up and walked away.

Business crimes

Businesses in Forest Lake were targets for criminals during the past week. Others were the target of vandals or would-be vandals.

A quick-change artist is believed to have worked his scheme at KFC, 1232 W. Broadway Ave. at 5 p.m. last Friday.

A store clerk reported that man came into the store and made a purchase for $1.05. After a series of exchanges of money between the man and the store cashier, it is believed the suspect made off with $40 in change, police said.

The subject was described  as a black male, 6-feet tall and between 35-40 years of age. Police are looking for a green Ford Taurus that the suspect may have been driving.

Circle E Wine & Spirits, 4869 N. 208th St. N., was also hit by thieves with a gambit on Tuesday, Oct. 7.

The store reported that two men entered the business shortly before 8 p.m. While one man occupied the clerk with the purchase of a scratch-off lottery ticket, the second man approached the teller with two bottles of Veuve Clicquot champagne.

The second man told the clerk he wanted to return the bottles for a refund. The clerk told the man that the purchase was non-refundable. The man then left the store with the champagne.

The clerk later discovered that two bottles of the champagne, valued at $54.99 each, were missing.

The theft was recorded by Forest Lake police as shoplifting. Police have no suspects, but will review store surveillance tape.

On Thursday, Oct. 9 at 9 p.m., Family Pathways Thrift Store, 1432 S. Lake St., reported vandalism to its front door. Police said it appeared someone had thrown a rock at the front door, breaking the glass.

Upper Deck Grill & Bar, 55 S. Lake St., reported an attempted vandalism at 2:22 a.m. on Sunday. Police were called to the bar after  a drunk male was found passed out in the south hallway of the bar.

Police said the 28-year-old man from Hugo passed out with a rock in his hand after failing to break in. He was taken to detox, police said.

Other crimes

Police here are also investigating a number of other crimes, including theft reports.

On Friday, a theft from vehicle report was made from 1291 W. Broadway Ave. where a truck was entered and two Dewalt pistol grip drills each worth $59 were stolen. The theft  was reported to police at 10:20 a.m. and likely took place overnight.

Also on Friday, police received a theft report from Country Inn & Suites, 1954 W. Broadway Ave., where a window to a 2007 Chevrolet pickup truck had been smashed out. The theft was reported at 6:45 a.m. and likely happened overnight.

The victim, Mastec, Inc. of Hugo, reported the theft of a Magellan GPS system, a gas card and a compact disc case with a dozen CDs for a total loss of $800.

On Saturday at 12:26 p.m., police received a report of a theft from a vehicle parked at the Third Lake public access on North Shore Trail N. The complainant told police the locked topper of his 2006 Ford F350 had been forcibly entered. Hunting related items and a back pack containing binoculars, a range finder and assorted apparel were stolen.

On Sunday at 6:30 p.m., a Forest Lake woman reported her purse was stolen from her vehicle parked at SW 6th Street and 3rd Avenue. The front passenger window was smashed in and the purse was taken. It contained $100 in cash and several credits cards and the victim’s driver’s license.

Canine assist

A Washington County Sheriff’s Office canine unit was called in to help police in Forest Lake after two men involved in a fight fled on foot.

Police were called to the Holiday Station, 1543 S. Lake St. at 7:19 p.m. to a report of a fight and the possibility that one of the combatants had a knife, police said.

Two suspects were apprehended with the help of the canine team. One subject, a 17-year-old male from North Branch, was tagged for underage consumption of alcohol and released to a responsible party.
