The Washington County Board of Commissioners, acting as the Regional Rail Authority last week, received an update on transit plans which will bring transit improvements to the Forest Lake area and further efforts for transit improvements throughout Washington County.
County Transportation Planner Mike Rogers told the board that the Metro Transit Route 288 from Forest Lake to downtown Minneapolis will start in early January.
The Metropolitan Council announcned this week the bus service will begin on Monday, Jan. 7.
Bus service will cost riders $2.75 each way and there will be five morning and afternoon trips leaving from the new transit center. The first trip, tentatively scheduled to leave at 5 a.m. will be a coach bus shuttle, connecting riders to the route 250 express bus leaving the 95th Avenue Park and Ride in Blaine.
Beginning at 5:45 a.m., coach buses are expected to leave directly from Forest Lake to downtown Minneapolis every half hour until 7:15 a.m.
The trips back to Forest Lake will start with four coach buses leaving downtown Minneapolis and traveling directly to Forest Lake every half hour starting at 3:30 p.m. Riders can also choose to take the route 250 bus that leaves downtown around 5:30 and travels to the 95th Ave. Park and Ride.
From there riders can catch the shuttle back to Forest Lake.
Rogers said the new transit center being constructed across from the Washington County Headwaters Service Center in Forest Lake and the Hardwood Creek Library will be completed in March with a grand opening expected in summer of 2008. The parking lot for the transit area is already complete.
