FL FFA chapter earns national honors PDF Print
Thursday, 06 November 2008
The Forest Lake High School FFA Chapter has been named a 3 Star National Chapter by the National FFA Organization which places the group among the top three percentile of chapters across the U.S.

Delegates from the Forest Lake FFA Chapter received the recognition last month during the second general session of the 81st annual National FFA Convention in Indianapolis, IN.

Individuals Michelle Medina and Andrew Miron were also honored at the national event.

“Being recognized for our achievements is always great especially on a national level,” said Logan Romines, chapter president.  “I’m very proud of what our chapter accomplished last year and hope that this next year will yield and even better result.”

The recognition was earned as a result of an application submitted by the students, which identified successful activities in the areas of student, chapter and community development.

These activities and the supporting documentation were first evaluated by a state committee, where the Forest Lake FFA was named one of Minnesota’s 10 best, and then advanced to national competition for additional review and recognition.

“This is an outstanding accomplishment for the chapter, but successful agricultural education programs and FFA chapters are supported by their schools, district leadership, and community,” said Mike Miron, an advisor and agriculture education teacher at the high school.

“This recognition is something to be shared and celebrated with all those who have supported and participated in FFA activities throughout the year.”

Toyota sponsors the National Chapter Award program as a special project of the National FFA Foundation. It is one of many ways FFA members accomplish the FFA mission and succeed in making a difference in their communities and the lives of their fellow students.

The National FFA Organization, formerly known as the Future Farmers of America, is a national youth organization of 507,763 student members — all preparing for leadership and careers in the science, business and technology of agriculture — as part of 7439 FFA chapters in all 50 states, Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands.

The high school Agricultural Education Department offers courses and internship opportunities in the areas of animal science, plant science, natural resource science, mechanics, business, and leadership development.  Students are also members of the Forest Lake FFA.

The FFA mission is to make a positive difference in the lives of students by developing their potential for premier leadership, personal growth and career success through agricultural education.

Individual honors

Medina was recognized an American FFA Degree winner. Earning the degree means Medina is one of a select group of individuals to be recognized for years of academic and professional excellence.

The honor was presented on October 25.

The American FFA Degree recognizes demonstrated leadership ability and outstanding achievements in agricultural business, production, processing or service programs.

To be eligible, members must have earned and productively invested $7500 through a supervised agricultural experience program in which they start, own, or hold a professional position in an existing agriculture enterprise.

Recipients must also make it their mission to demonstrate outstanding leadership abilities and community involvement. Each award recipient receives a gold American FFA Degree key.

Of 507,763 FFA members nationwide, Medina was one of only 3341 to be recognized in 2008.

The degree recognition program is sponsored by Case IH, The Farm Credit System, Pioneer Hi-Bred International, Inc. and Syngenta as a special project of the National FFA Foundation.

Medina is the daughter of Tim and Shelly Medina.  Medina currently attends the University of Minnesota majoring in Agricultural Education.

Andrew Miron competed in the National Creed Speaking Career Development Event during the national convention.

As the Minnesota State FFA Champion, Miron earned the right to be one of 49 finalists participating at the national level where he earned a bronze emblem rating.

The FFA Creed was written by E. M. Tiffany in 1930 to represent the ideals, values, and purposes of the National FFA Organization and its members. The National FFA Creed Speaking Career Development Event is designed to recognize outstanding FFA members for their ability to present the National FFA Creed in a competitive setting.

Members deliver the creed from memory and respond to three questions. The event gives FFA members the opportunity to develop their ability to communicate in a powerful, organized and professional manner.

The event is one of many educational activities at the national convention in which FFA members practice the lessons taught in agricultural education classes. The event was held at the Marriott Hotel in Indianapolis.  The creed speaking event is sponsored by CHS Foundation of Inver Grove Heights, Minnesota and The National FFA Foundation.

Miron is the son of Fran and Mary Ann Miron of Hugo.
