Students soaked in the wise words of U.S. Army Col. Jim Noll (retired) of Forest Lake on Tuesday at Forest Lake High School's annual salute to Veterans Day. The program included student-produced speeches and the musical talents of the high school bands and choirs. Noll, a retired teacher in ISD 831, served his country during the Vietnam War and also was activated to serve in the first Gulf War. He was the featured speaker for the morning program

Decorated veteran Col. Jim Noll, a longtime Forest Lake junior high school industrial technology teacher, served as guest speaker. The recipient of three Purple Hearts told a packed gymnasium that the freedoms we often take for granted do not come free. “That is by choice that we keep this the greatest country in the world,” said the former Vietnam platoon leader. Noll had to leave behind his wife and seven children to serve as a battalion commander in Operation Desert Storm. “Being a veteran means...being put in harm’s way, but it also means that the families of those loved ones suffered,” he said. Noll lamented that Nov. 11 can no longer be honored as Armistice Day, because the world continued to wage battle even after the “war to end all wars” concluded on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month in 1918. |
